Google’s New Looking Glass

Google Instant Preview was recently launched and is now usable in all of your search results from Google.com. You'll see a magnifying glass to the right of your search results - once you click on the magnifying glass, you'll see a preview of the web page for that search result. It fits nicely into the right hand side of the page, but isn't too big. Once you've clicked on that first magnifying glass, you'll automatically see previews of all other web pages in the search results just by moving your mouse down the page. Google continues to provide innovative ways to save time by allowing you to quickly preview all your search results and see what you're likely to be most interested in.

How can this affect your practice web site? And do you stand to gain or lose by it?

Here are a few things that you should do in order to make the most of the new preview feature:

  • Your site needs to look as clean and attractive as possible. This increases the chances that someone will like what they see in the preview and want to visit your site.
  • Instant preview displays a big orange call out box if the keywords that were searched for are somewhat close together in the text on your page. If someone does a search, for 'optometrist Lincoln', and you have positioned the words optometrist and Lincoln relatively close together, Google will show them in a big orange call out box, which helps draw more attention to your page and allow visitors to see if that's what they're looking for.
  • Take some time to review the top keywords that people use to visit your web site and re-write some content on your home page to have good marketing sentences that include those keywords close together.  This will trigger the call out box and hopefully bring your more traffic.

All this well help visitors better determine if they should come to your site. Note that there is no reporting feature which allows you to know how many times people previewed your page.

A word of warning! Since people are now better able to preview your site without actually visiting it, there's a chance that you'll notice a decrease in traffic, as less people will 'poke their heads into your site and leave', so to speak. It's also possible, but not yet proven that those visitors who do come to the site may stay there for longer since you are more than likely what they are looking for.
